Exactly, That is what I teach the delegates. Those that use them stop using them after my course. The whole course is about firstly controlling your flash on camera (brackets preferred) and then off camera on light stands and skyport triggers with umbrellas. We have to start somewhere and how not to do it is where we start then progress to how it should be done.

No red eye. Delegates are taught how to use on camera flash correctly and advised to take off camera where ever possible. I need to show delegates the considerable difference between on camera and of camera. I use skyport triggers, umbrellas and grids to get the results I want. Weddings can be hectic affairs and very often on camera (with a bracket) is the only way to capture the “Moment”. People on my course have not yet bought the right equipment, they are on the course – to be educated.

one more question, what do you teach your students when it comes to getting the exposure right? do you have to swith shutter speed or ap every time you move around with the bride and groom? or just use one of the auto settings?

It is coming to my attention that comments are being made about the stofen “diffuser” being used as well as direct flash. I should point out that the whole purpose of the course is to direct people on the correct use of camera flash and as a result they need to know how not to do it. Of course the Stofen is useless as a diffuser, it is designed to be used in the bounce position. Secondly, a great deal of the course is about taking your camera flash of camera.

well If I had the chance I would love to go to one of your courses you seem like a very good wedding photography teacher! I myself will be doing 2 weddings and pray I get it right. lol

People arrive at my course with the sto-fen “diffuser” it is my job to tell them they are no good as a diffuser and advise them to remove them. I teach them how to take their flash off camera with skyport triggers, umbrella and grids. The course starts with not how to do it and continues with how it should be done. Thats what teaching is all about. The creative image results my delegates get from of camera flash during the course are stunning.

Hi, at a wedding I will use either tv, av or m depending upon the shot. I do not have time to take meter readings apart from when I am shooting the bride and groom on their own. In camera reflected light readings sometimes and also balancing ambient with flash through the use of the shutter speed. I work with the flash on a bracket as well as on a light stand with radio triggers.

Interesting. Seems you are in the UK? I would absolutely love to get across the pond and shoot a wedding in the UK sometime, I just don’t know anybody getting married over there :/
